Pundit salutes ‘outstanding’ Wesley Fofana amid £75m Chelsea twist

Alan Hutton has claimed Wesley Fofana is an “outstanding” defender and will only improve upon a move to Chelsea.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender claimed Leicester City rejected a recent offer from the Blues in order to hold out for a higher price.

Fofana has five years remaining on his contract at the King Power stadium.

On Wednesday (24 August), Sky Sports reported that Brendan Rodgers’ side had rejected a £70million bid from the London club.

But according to Sky Sports (27 August), the Foxes have now reached a verbal agreement with Thomas Tuchel’s side over the 21-year-old that could be worth up to £75m with add-ons.

It is understood that personal terms have already been agreed with the defender.

Fofana wasn’t included in the matchday squad as Leicester lost 2-1 to Chelsea on Saturday (27 August).

Hutton insisted the East Midlands club were holding out for as much money as possible.

I think they knew that Chelsea were going to come back in for him,” he told Football Insider.

It’s Chelsea’s number one target, they were holding out for as much money as possible. Rumours at one point were £80m, I think it’s a hell of a lot of money.

Look, he’s an outstanding player, I think he’ll come into that team and make them better there’s no doubt about that. He’s young, he can still get better, there’s room for improvement and I think he will with better players round about him.

Leicester were definitely holding out because I think they knew Chelsea were going to come back in because it’s their number one target.
