Pundit shares ‘absolute best’ claim as Antony tipped to explode at Man United
Antony’s big-money price tag will not weigh him down as he looks to make an impact at Man United.
That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Red Devils’ latest signing.
On Tuesday (30 August) Man United confirmed they had reached an agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Antony, 22.
The deal was then confirmed on Thursday (1 September) in a deal that Sky Sports claim is worth £85million.
He becomes Man United’s fifth senior signing of the summer and the second to follow Erik ten Hag to Old Trafford following the arrival of Lisandro Martinez earlier in the window.
McLeish is certain Antony will be a success at Man United.
“The price tag can be heavy around the neck,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.
“That’s where you absolutely must be confident about the type of player you are bringing in. Ten Hag knows this guy, he would not have pursued this deal without knowing that player would make an impact.
“This is what we know about world-renowned players. Antony isn’t renowned yet but we know his name from watching Dutch football.
“Back when I was a manager, I knew every household name but we were not in a position to go out and buy them.
“That’s where you need shrewd recruitment but Man United need the absolute best so now it is up to Antony to prove he is the absolute best.”

Antony scored eight goals in 23 league appearances for Ajax last season.
He also chipped in with four assists as he helped his side win a second successive league title.
