Pundit shares ‘big’ Bryan Gil claim after what he spotted at Tottenham

Noel Whelan has claimed Bryan Gil’s cameo against Sporting CP will be “invaluable” in keeping him “fresh and hungry” at Tottenham.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 21-year-old was “really impressive” off the bench against the Portuguese side.

Gil, who is yet to feature in the Premier League for Tottenham this season, came off the bench for the last 20 minutes on Wednesday (26 October) as Antonio Conte’s side drew 1-1 against Sporting.

Conte also handed a first start of the season to long-serving winger Lucas Moura after his struggles with injury this term.

Tottenham could have secured a place in the Champions League knockout stage but will now have to wait for the outcome of next month’s (1 November) clash with Marseille.

Gil, who cost Spurs a reported £21.6million in 2021, spent the second half of last season on loan at Valencia.

Whelan claimed Conte was right to rebuild his relationship with the winger as “injuries and suspensions” could mean he jumps up the pecking order.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “These are the sort of games you need to give these players minutes.

“Tottenham have got a big squad with players who have cost them big money.

“They might not have won the game but giving the minutes to players like Bryan Gil and Lucas Moura is invaluable to keep them fresh and keep them hungry.

“You never know when injuries and suspensions will hit, so it’s really important that Conte gets the relationship going and puts players like Gil out on the pitch to see what they can do.

“I thought Gil was really quite impressive.”
