Pundit shares damning Luke Shaw claim after ‘really big’ Man United development

Noel Whelan has insisted Luke Shaw will find it “very hard” to get back into the Man United eleven after he was replaced by Tyrell Malacia.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 27-year-old is one of a number of shunned Red Devils stars who “haven’t done it” during their time at the club.

Shaw started the first two games of the season but was hooked at half-time during Man United’s 4-0 loss against Brentford earlier this month – and hasn’t featured since.

New arrival Malacia has replaced the 27-year-old in the line-up as Erik ten Hag’s side have recorded back-to-back wins against Liverpool and Southampton.

Shaw was one of England’s star performers at the European Championships in 2021 but now faces a fight to regain his first-team berth ahead of November’s World Cup in Qatar.

The left-back is out of contract at the end of the season – with Man United holding the option of an extra year.

Whelan hailed Ten Hag for making a number of “really big decisions” for his team’s benefit so far this term.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think Luke Shaw is in the same boat as a lot of Man United players.

“There have been big changes already, and Ten Hag’s not scared to drop big players or big names.

“Malacia is someone who he trusts and he knows – and dropping Shaw is just one of a few really big decisions he has taken.

“That’s one thing I like about him. He’s not bothered about the stature or the names.

“He’s just trying to build a squad who are going to work hard for him and work on the ball and off the ball.

“If that means people like Luke Shaw sitting on the bench, then so be it. Bar Cristiano Ronaldo, none of them have done it for Man United.

“It’s going to be very hard for Shaw to get back into that side now.”
