Pundit shares emphatic Callum Wilson claim after what he’s spotted at Newcastle United – ‘you can’t…’

Noel Whelan has claimed Newcastle United hitman Callum Wilson has “got to” be in the England squad for this month’s World Cup after his recent form.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 30-year-old should go to Qatar alongside Harry Kane, Ivan Toney, and Marcus Rashford.

Wilson scored a brace against Aston Villa on Saturday (29 October) during Newcastle’s 4-0 win over the struggling Midlands club.

Those goals take his tally for the season to six – with the four-cap international only starting nine Premier League games.

Wilson’s last England cap came in a 6-0 win against Bulgaria during qualifying for the European Championships in 2019.

According to The Athletic (1 November), the former Bournemouth star has been named on Gareth Southgate’s 55-man longlist ahead of the final squad’s announcement on 10 November.

Whelan backed Roma striker Abraham to miss out at Wilson’s expense.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “If you’re going on form and goals, then he’s got to be in that squad.

“You’ve got four players who should be going. Kane, Toney, Wilson, and Rashford.

“Everyone’s talking about Tammy Abraham, but why? He’s scored the least goals of all these players.

“Why should he go when players like Wilson are playing at a better level and scoring more goals? Wilson deserves this opportunity.

“Rashford can play across the midfield as well as through the middle, so that’s another option.

“You can’t overlook Callum Wilson right now. He’s in good form and a good place – and it’ll be hard to leave him behind.”
