Pundit shares ‘massive’ Steve Cooper sack claim after Nottingham Forest source’s reveal

Noel Whelan has claimed Nottingham Forest must “put all their trust ” in manager Steve Cooper despite the promoted club still sitting bottom of the league.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Forest would alter their recruitment plan if they could “go back in time” to the summer window.

Cooper’s side recorded a famous 1-0 victory over last season’s runners-up Liverpool at the City Ground on Saturday (22 October) – but they remain in 20th place.

The former Swansea boss signed a fresh contract running until 2025 earlier this month amid rumours of a potential departure.

Nottingham Forest have already sacked transfer chiefs George Syrianos and Andy Scott following a review of their reported £150million summer spend.

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (26 October) that Nottingham Forest are planning to spend up to £100million in the January window to escape relegation – despite adding 22 players during the off-season.

Whelan claimed the Midlands giants should have made loan deals from their successful Championship campaign permanent in the summer.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think there’s still massive pressure on Cooper. He’s got to make big decisions with all these new players at the club.

“He’s got to find a system that works.

“But I think ultimately Forest have got to put all their trust in Cooper. It’s been a whirlwind start to the season, bringing in 22 players – which is probably too many.

Nottingham Forest, Evangelos Marinakis

“They’ve gone all out because they had that scared feeling about stepping up to the Premier League.

“I think if they could go back in time they’d probably go out and get some of the loan players that got them into the Premier League in the first place.”
