Pundit shares new Steven Gerrard sack claim after what he’s seen at Aston Villa

Noel Whelan has claimed Steven Gerrard could “buy some serious time” in the Aston Villa hot seat by claiming all three points against Nottingham Forest on Monday (10 October).

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted “you can’t argue with points on the board” as the Midlands giants look to go four games unbeaten.

Aston Villa played out a 0-0 draw with Leeds United last week (2 October) after picking up four points from games against Man City and Southampton before the international break.

Sources told Football Insider last month (30 September) that the Midlands giants are sounding out Mauricio Pochettino and Unai Emery over potentially taking the manager’s job at Villa Park.

It is understood that Aston Villa chiefs are prepared to act if results do not improve before next month’s break for the World Cup in Qatar.

Whelan backed Gerrard‘s side to pick up maximum points at the City Ground if “they are at the top of their game”.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “You can’t argue with getting points on the board.

“When you look at the possibility of getting eight points from a possible 12 in Gerrard’s position, that sounds brilliant – but they haven’t done it yet.

“Nottingham Forest are scrapping away and finding Premier League life difficult, but they’ll try and make their home advantage count.

“Aston Villa aren’t playing to the standard that Steven Gerrard will expect, so it’s one of those question mark games.

“If they are at the top of their game then they probably do come out with three points. The pressure is all on Forest at the moment.

“Gerrard is scrapping for his job, but a result here will definitely buy him some serious time.”
