Pundit shares unexpected claim after ‘surprise’ Man City development

Brighton have provided the blueprint of how to beat Man City at the Etihad.

That’s according to former Leeds United hitman Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about City’s most recent outing.

Man City beat Brighton 3-1 on Saturday (22 October) though the visitors caused plenty of problems for the home side.

As per BBC Sport, the Seagulls enjoyed 52% of the possession through the game compared to City’s 48%.

The visitors also registered eight shots though only two of those were on target.

Whelan insists Brighton’s game plan “surprised” Manchester City.

“It’s one of those games where you have to take the game to them,” Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“You can’t sit back because you will get hurt. I think the best form of defence is attack against Manchester City.

“You may as well have a go and go down fighting, having a proper go at them. It’s all credit to Brighton, they probably surprised Man City by how attacking they were.

“They have the players to go forward and why not? Why would you go to lose away at Man City? You take the game to them, you surprise them.

“Brighton made a good go of it and if they carry on like that then Brighton will be a team to fear.”
