Pundit shares verdict on Man United scrapping Antony move after new twist

Noel Whelan has backed Man United to press on with a deal for Antony in the final week of the transfer window despite seeing their latest bid rejected.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Old Trafford club could end up “paying over the odds” for the 22-year-old.

According to Sky Sports (26 August), Man United’s latest bid for winger Antony – worth £76.3million – has been rejected by Ajax.

The Brazil international has revealed his desperate desire to leave the Dutch giants this summer – and insisted the club have received a “great offer” for his services.

Man United started the season with humiliating losses against Brighton and Brentford but bounced back with a 2-1 win over rivals Liverpool last week.

Wingers Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho grabbed the decisive goals in an unexpected win at Old Trafford.

Whelan insisted Man United will press ahead with a move for Antony despite goals from the England international pair.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “People said they didn’t need Sancho when they went out and got him,”

“Some people accused Man United of paying over the odds – but when they get it in their heads that they want someone, they usually go out and get them.

“I don’t think the goals from Rashford and Sancho will make a difference.

They looked sharp the other night, but they need big names and new bodies into the football club.

“They’ll be pushing for Antony in this final week – and I think the fans would be really happy to see him come in and bolster this squad.”
