Pundit shares verdict on Newcastle United completing ‘superstar’ signing amid ‘big-money’ claim
Paul Robinson has claimed Newcastle won’t look to sign any “superstars” in January in the hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.
The former Tottenham and England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested “rash spending” will not help the Magpies’ “project” in the long term.
Newcastle beat third-place Tottenham 2-1 on Sunday (23 October) – their fifth victory of the season.
Eddie Howe’s side moved ahead of Man United and up into fourth place with the win.
Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Howe insisted his side won’t “get ahead of themselves” in an attempt to avoid “external pressure” at St James’ Park.
Newcastle have reportedly spent £200million on players since their Saudi-backed takeover last year (2021) but club chief Dan Ashworth has insisted that is “unsustainable”.
Robinson claimed the Magpies are “a lot further forward” in their plans than they will expected.
When asked if Newcastle could accelerate their spending in January if a top-four berth is still in reach, he told Football Insider: “No, I think it’s still a work in progress.
“I think if you ask Eddie Howe about the Champions League, it’s still something they are targeting further down the line.
“They’re a lot further forward then they’ll have expected to be.
“Their spending so far has been very realistic, which is a very good thing.
“They’ve built on the side they already had; they’ve built on those positions. I don’t think they’ll be any rash spending in the hopes of getting into that top four.
“I can’t see them spending big on Champions League superstars when what they’ve got is working. It’s a project, and I don’t think doing that would help them.”
