Pundit shares verdict on Thomas Tuchel landing extended ban after confirmed Chelsea news

Noel Whelan has claimed Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel and Tottenham manager Antonio Conte shouldn’t face further punishment for their touchline fracas on Sunday (14 August).

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted having the pair of “serial winners” in the English game is “brilliant”.

Tuchel and Conte clashed throughout the match but tensions reached boiling point following the handshake after the teams’ 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

A spokesperson for the FA confirmed on Monday (15 August) that both managers have a case to answer for their “improper behaviour” after the final whistle – and must respond by Thursday (18 August).

Tuchel could yet face further charges after his comments about the performance of referee Anthony Taylor – who made a number of contentious decisions during the clash.

Whelan claimed the majority of fans will have enjoyed watching the hotly-contested London derby.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “They got red cards, I think that’s probably enough as far as punishment goes.

“I think if you ask the majority of people – ‘do you want to see that?’, they’ll say ‘absolutely’.

“It’s passion from two managers who are serial winners and two clubs who are fierce rivals.

“We’ve seen it before from these two clubs – it’s a game that certainly never disappoints.

“I love it. The end of the game was perfect, and it shows exactly what this league is all about.

“It sets out the stall from both managers and shows that they won’t accept anything other than a win. It’s brilliant for the game to have them around.”
