Pundit ‘shocked’ by ‘ridiculous’ Kane development after Tottenham footage emerges
Tottenham striker Harry Kane’s challenge on Liverpool’s Andy Robertson was a “leg breaker”, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the decision not to hand the 28-year-old a red card was “ridiculous”.
Kane caught Robertson with a reckless lunge in the first half as Tottenham claimed a 2-2 home draw against Liverpool yesterday (19 December).
Speaking to Sky Sports, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insisted the challenge was “definitely a red card” and questioned the use of VAR during the game.
Post-match, Kane claimed he “won the ball” and suggested the use of slow-motion made the tackle look worse.
Whelan insisted Kane would have seen red if he wasn’t the captain of the England national side.
“It was a ridiculous decision. It’s a red card all day long,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“I think if he wasn’t the England captain, he’d have been sent off.
“If Harry Winks made that tackle, he’d have been sent off. It’s a leg breaker. It’s a reckless, out-of-control challenge made by a player who is running at full tilt.
“I don’t care what anyone says, that is a shocking tackle. It’s a good job Robertson was able to get his leg up and out of the way.”
Robertson later saw red for a forceful swipe on Spurs defender Emerson Royal.

Tottenham are six points adrift of Champions League qualification with three games in hand on fourth-place Arsenal.
Liverpool are three points away from Premier League leaders Man City.
