Pundit slams Everton board for repeated blunder after Lampard talks update

Noel Whelan has blasted the Everton board for “rushing into” appointing a new manager after reportedly offering Frank Lampard the job.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Goodison chief are “bringing more heat onto the club” with their decision making.

As reported by the Liverpool Echo today (29 January), Everton have offered Lampard the post and are in talks over terms of the deal.

The Toffees are also reportedly discussing the potential make-up of the backroom staff.

Whelan insisted the board are piling on the pressure by moving so quickly after Rafael Benitez’s exit.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think they’re rushing into things. I get the fact that they’re at the bottom end of the table.

“At the same time, how many times have they rushed into getting managers?

“They’ve not given themselves really any breathing space since the manager left to try and get another one in. Duncan would be, for me, a safe option to the end of the season.

“I think you’d get the desired outcome that you’re looking for, which is Premier League safety. Then take it from there. Give yourself that little bit more time.

“All they’re doing is bringing more heat onto the club with managers that they don’t feel are fit to run Everton.

“They’re piling a lot of pressure on themselves and unwanted negative atmosphere. Right now, they don’t need that.”

Duncan Ferguson is currently in caretaker charge of the Toffees.

The Toffees coach lost his first game in temporary charge 1-0 to Aston Villa.
