Pundit suggests real reason for Man United ‘freefall’ amid £897m reveal
Noel Whelan has suggested a questionable transfer policy is the driving force behind the recent “freefall” at Man United.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the current crop of Red Devils stars are a “mismatch” of different manager’s signings – with a “massive rebuild” required.
Man United slumped to a 4-0 away defeat against Brentford on Saturday (13 August) – marking their seventh straight league away defeat and their worst start to a top-flight season in 101 years.
According to Transfermarkt, the Old Trafford club have spent a total of £897.4million on new additions since the summer of 2016.
The Red Devils last won a trophy in 2017 – when they won both the Europa League and League Cup under Jose Mourinho’s stewardship.
However, fierce rivals Man City and Liverpool have since dominated English football – finishing 35 and 36 points ahead of Man United respectively last season.
Whelan insisted “everyone is relishing playing against” Erik ten Hag’s side after their dismal start.
“They’ve got the transfers wrong for about six years now,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“This has just been brewing and brewing.
“While they’ve been getting it wrong, other sides have been getting it right.
“There are so many questions about the transfer policy at the club – and how you’ve got a jigsaw of different managers and their signings trying to fit together.
“It’s a mismatch, and it’s a real issue.

“They’ve got a massive rebuild ahead and it’s going to take a long time to complete. I don’t know where they start, or how they attract these players.
“It’s a big name club but I tell you what, everyone is relishing playing against them. They’re in freefall.”
