Pundit suggests the real reason PIF have allowed record-breaking Alexander Isak deal at Newcastle United

Alexander Isak was signed by Newcastle United as a direct response to Callum Wilson’s injury problems.

That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider amid the latest on the striker’s fitness.

Wilson, 30, scored for the Magpies in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Man City on Sunday (21 August) before withdrawing in the second half with a hamstring complaint.

As reported by journalist Miles Starforth (23 August), the club are awaiting the results of a scan on the centre-forward’s injury.

Since the injury, Newcastle have confirmed the signing of Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad in a club-record deal.

McLeish insists Isak has arrived as a direct result of Wilson’s injury problems.

“Callum has been blighted by this injury,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“He has had a few of them over the last couple of years. He’s a brilliant player and scored a marvellous goal against Man City last weekend.

“He is a player that any team would want in the squad but to lose him means they have to do business. They have to bring one of the best up-and-coming players in European football to the club.

“This isn’t a nobody, everyone knows who Alexander Isak is, especially after playing so well for Sweden.”

Isak joins after scoring six La Liga goals in 32 appearances last season.

He could make his debut against Wolves on Sunday (28 August).
