Pundit suggests ‘unbelievable’ Tottenham – Harry Kane claim

Noel Whelan has claimed a potential domestic cup success for Tottenham this season could grease the wheels in Harry Kane’s contract negotiations.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Spurs’ trophy drought during the striker’s career has been “quite unbelievable”.

Kane, 28, currently has two years left to run on his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium having signed a four-year deal in 2018 – with no sign of an imminent renewal.

As per Sky Sports (23 July), Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann has opened the door on a future move for the England captain during a press conference.

He claimed Kane would “score a lot” in the Bundesliga, before adding “we will see what happens in the future” – as speculation continues about a possible transfer next summer.

When asked about a potential success which could persuade Kane to renew his deal, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think you’ve got to be looking at a cup win.

“Bring something back for the fans and break that barren run. Whether he leaves or not, he’d be winning a trophy for a club that he loves and a club that loves him.

“He’s given a lot of his best years to Tottenham, and they’ve probably underachieved in that time – when you look at the players they’ve had and the money they’ve spent.

“For a club of Tottenham’s size to go on a trophyless streak for this long, it’s quite unbelievable.

“I think to keep Kane around they will definitely have to finish in the top four again – but also really make a push to win a domestic cup.

“When he comes to the end of next season, whether they’ve been successful or not, he will dictate what is next – not Daniel Levy.”
