Pundit suggests who is really to blame at Everton after source’s Frank Lampard sack update

Noel Whelan has insisted the Everton board must shoulder a big portion of responsibility if Frank Lampard is to lose his job in the coming days.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Lampard was given a “really tough job” with the Merseyside club in a “mess” behind the scenes.

Everton slipped to a 3-1 defeat in the FA Cup away at Man United on Friday (6 January) – meaning they have won just one of their last 12 games in all competitions.

Sources told Football Insider on 5 January that Everton are expected to sack Lampard ahead of their Premier League clash against Southampton next week (14 January).

The former Chelsea midfielder took over 12 months ago and steered the Toffees clear of relegation amid a backdrop of boardroom chaos at Goodison Park.

Fans are planning a sit-in protest against the “incompetent” running of the club by Farhad Moshiri and Bill Kenwright – which will take place during the game against Arsenal next month.

This unrest comes with Everton sitting in the bottom three on goal difference.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “The board need to look at themselves as well.

“They’ve given any manager a really tough job – whether it’s Frank Lampard or anyone else who may come in after him.

“They’ve had a lot of managers in quick succession, and it just seems to be a bit of a mess.

“It was never an easy job to walk into for Lampard, and that’s been proven.

“I think the writing is on the wall for him. Once the fans turn, that is usually it – and they’ve turned on the manager and board.

“The style of play is not good enough. I think a change is probably the right way to go – and hopefully, they can get this one right.

“But the board have got to commit to doing the work in the background.”
