Pundit tips ‘massive’ Trent Alexander-Arnold change at Liverpool after development

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s form at Liverpool could see a “massive” improvement thanks to his time with England at the World Cup.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the defender’s future.

England played out a dour 0-0 draw against the USA on Friday (25 November) – with some fans calling for Alexander-Arnold, 24, to be introduced after a blunt attacking display.

The defender is part of England’s 26-man squad at the World Cup in Qatar but is yet to play a single minute across two group games.

This comes after a first half of the season in which he was heavily criticised for his defensive ability as Liverpool struggled to pick up wins.

McAvennie claims Alexander-Arnold’s experience of World Cup football will help him find his best form.

“He’s away with some of the best players in the world,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Some of those are at Liverpool too but they haven’t been playing like it. I just wonder if things had got stale for him there.

“You wonder if some time spent on the other side of the world with a different group of players might help him.

“He’s not playing but he isn’t getting a load of rest. He will be training hard. It might just clear his head before he goes back to Liverpool.

“Don’t be surprised if we see a massive improvement in the second half of the season.

Sometimes it’s as simple as just taking yourself away from it all.”
