Pundit tips West Ham signing spree in January after £150m Times update

Noel Whelan has tipped West Ham to splash the cash in the January transfer window should Daniel Kretinsky buy a significant share in the club.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Czech billionaire’s investment could allow the Irons to spend on strengthening their squad.

As reported by the Times, Kretinsky is in advanced talks to buy a 27 per cent stake in the Hammers for around £150million.

The prospective deal would mean West Ham’s total value would be around the £600million mark.

Kretinsky is already co-owner and president of Czech giants Sparta Prague.

Whelan hailed his experience and know-how ahead of a potential investment in West Ham.

He suggested his arrival as an investor would see the Irons look to do some deals in January.

Discussing Kretinsky’s experience of running Sparta Prague, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Football, and owning a club, is a specialised business. It’s a specialised position.

“You’ve got to know how to run it, you’ve got to know how to manage it financially. Everything that goes along with a football club is quite complex.

“Him having that experience, he isn’t coming into a football club blind. He knows what to expect. He knows how to run an establishment and the business properly.

“That 27 per cent brings in some money to the football club. There could be some new additions as well. You look into January, they’re flying high the minute they’re really really looking good when it comes to all competitions.

“They’re a joy to watch. They’ve been fantastic this season. You can only see with this investment that has come into the club there could be some more investment in January if they keep up this pace.”
