Noel Whelan has tipped Manchester United to float the idea of a swap deal involving Jack Grealish if Aston Villa enquire about Jesse Lingard this summer.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Red Devils could offer a £60million fee, as well as the current West Ham loanee, for the Villans’ talisman.
As revealed by Football Insider on Tuesday, Villa are ready to rival West Ham for Lingard this summer after his resurgence in east London.
The 28-year-old has netted nine goals and contributed four assists in 10 appearances for the Irons since joining in January.
He has proven his versatility by operating both out wide and as a central attacking midfielder for David Moyes.
That ticks the boxes for Villa, who are in the market for two new wide forwards this summer.
Whelan suggested if Villa were to come in for Lingard then a swap deal would be mooted.
Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “Who’s not going to be interested right now in Jesse Lingard? Nine goals in 10 games, four assists I mean, he’s just on fire at the minute.
“That would be an exciting fit, wouldn’t it? I mean even if Grealish left for a lot of money. You’d see him very much as a replacement for Grealish as well.
“We know how important he is to them but I don’t see too many players that would bring those similar kind of stats than Jesse Lingard right now.
“Maybe think about that side of things as well. If he does go, Manchester United have been interested for a long time in Grealish. Maybe, just maybe, there’s a swap on the cards.
“This might be one thing that Man United are tempted with, that they see on the cards. A year left, it would be £60million and Jesse Lingard. That to me is a good deal.”
In other news, Aston Villa are working on a deal to sign West Brom playmaker.
