Pundit verdict on Fabinho potentially quitting Liverpool – ‘the money has gone through the roof’

Frank McAvennie has told Liverpool to keep hold of Fabinho until the end of his contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said the Reds will struggle to command a fee of £50million for the 29-year-old.

According to the Anfield Buzz (15 November), the Merseysiders have set an asking price of £50m for the midfielder who is attracting interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

The Brazilian’s current Anfield contract expires in 2026.

According to journalist Neil Jones, relayed by Anfield Watch (27 November), the Reds would need to offload Fabinho in order to secure Declan Rice in the summer.

When asked if Liverpool would be able to get £50m for Fabinho, McAvennie told Football Insider: “Not in today’s market.

Nothing surprises me now. The money has gone through the roof. I think he has been alright in bits.

He was great at just sitting there and letting people do all the running. Now that the team is getting older, you need people in there that will freshen him up.

I do not think they will get £50million for him. He has still got four years, he is a good one to keep. If they can freshen up the midfield then Fabinho would be a great part of that.

He [Klopp] has got to freshen up and that is not a sleight on any of the players there.
