Pundit verdict on Fred quitting Man United amid ‘£50m’ claim
Alan Hutton has claimed Man United won’t let Fred leave “on the cheap”
But, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender said United won’t be able to make their money back.
According to the Sun (22 December), the 29-year-old is on Paris Saint-Germain’s wanted list and are long term admirers of the midfielder.
The Brazilian’s contract was set to expire at the end of the season but United recently triggered his 12 month extension to stop him leaving for free in the summer.
Fred has made just four league starts for the Red Devils this season, but Erik ten Hag is believed to be a fan of the midfielder, despite giving him limited game time.
He joined Old Trafford from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018 for a fee of around £50m.
When asked if United will be able to recoup the money spent on Fred, Hutton told Football Insider: “£50m is a big number.
“Are they [PSG] going to pay that? I am not so sure.

“Man United triggered his extension to safeguard him and make sure he does not leave on the cheap. It probably will have to be a decent amount to get him out but I think £50m is a lot of money for that kind of defensive player.
“It will be interesting to see which route they go because it seems like Erik ten Hag does like him or he would be willing just to ship him out. But I think £50m is a bit high.“
