Pundit verdict on Leon Balogun re-signing for Rangers as new details emerge

Frank McAvennie has claimed Leon Balogun will not return to Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker said a return to Ibrox would not make any difference to the Gers.

The 34-year-old was sold on a move to QPR last summer by the now-Rangers boss Michael Beale and left the Glasgow giants on a free transfer after his contract expired.

Speaking to the Beautiful Game podcast (6 December), the Nigeria international admitted he did not want to walk away from the Light Blues but suspected ex-boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst was not keen on offering him a new deal.

Balogun said he did not “leave” the Bears, instead he claimed he was “released” by the club and was not expecting to depart.

The centre-back added that it was “heartbreaking” for him to leave Ibrox.

The defender’s QPR contract expires next summer.

When asked if a return to the Gers would be on the cards for Balogun, McAvennie told Football Insider:He will still be getting more money than he will at Rangers.

Balogun was alright, coming back would not make much difference to Rangers. I do not know if Balogun would be the man.

I could why they would have wanted to keep him but Gio would have been told to get rid of some players.

Balogun made 37 appearances for the Gers across all competitions last season.

The defender netted two goals in those outings.
