Pundit verdict on Man United completing Tariq Lamptey signing after latest

Man United will find it difficult to sign January target Tariq Lamptey this summer, according to Paul Robinson.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Tottenham and England goalkeeper questioned whether Lamptey was a “huge upgrade” on Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Manchester Evening News reported earlier this month (8 July) that Erik ten Hag wants to add a new right-back and centre-back to his squad ahead of the 2022-23 season.

Man United

United confirmed on Sunday (17 July) that they had agreed a deal with Ajax for centre-back Lisandro Martinez, subject to a medical, personal terms being agreed and a work permit.

The Daily Mail reported at the beginning of the year (12 January) that the club were strongly interested in Lamptey who was valued at £40million by Brighton & Hove Albion.

Asked whether the right-back could be an attacking alternative for United, Robinson told Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs: “I think Wan-Bissaka is attacking as well, he’s just had the shackles put on him a little bit in the last couple of seasons.

“Lamptey is a good option, he’s a good player. Is he a huge improvement on Wan-Bissaka? He’s another quality addition to the squad.

“I’m not sure I can quite see that one. They’ll have a problem getting him out.”

West Ham

Lamptey still has three years left to run on his contract with Brighton.

He moved to the club from Chelsea in January 2020 and has only racked up 50 Premier League appearances after suffering a serious hamstring injury in December 2020.

In other news, Cristiano Ronaldo may now miss the start of the season at Man United after a Sky update.
