Pundit worried about Rico Lewis after Man City latest – ‘something’s not right’

Frank McAvennie is worried Rico Lewis won’t be able to handle the constant rotation at Man City.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker insisted Pep Guardiola needs to “be careful” with Lewis.

Last month (7 January), Football Insider revealed that City are ready to offer the 18-year-old a huge pay rise to commit his long-term future to the club.

Now, according to the Daily Star (4 February), the Sky Blues are set to offer the defender a 400 per cent pay increase, seeing his salary rise from £5,000 per week to £25,000.

Lewis signed his first professional contract in the summer and his current deal expires in 2024.

He has made 19 appearances for Guardiola’s side so far this season and has often been preferred to Kyle Walker and the now departed Joao Cancelo.

The youngster even filled in at left-back in the 1-0 defeat to Tottenham last weekend (5 February).

But McAvennie is worried about Lewis’s development at City.

I thought Pep was bringing him in and playing him in different places,” he told Football Insider.

He played him at left-back last week. I guarantee he has never gone to bed and dreamed about playing at left-back. This is a boy who is only 18, can he handle that? He got caught out of position a few times.

But his attitude is great, he is doing anything the manager is asking him.

But Pep tinkers too much and I think he needs to be careful with Lewis. He will be loving playing with all the players but there is something not right there.
