Pundit ‘wowed’ as Liverpool were ready to break the bank to sign Kylian Mbappe
Alan Hutton has suggested Liverpool were prepared to smash their wage structure to sign Kylian Mbappe this summer.
The former Scotland international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Reds must have been “in the same ballpark figures-wise” to have held talks over a deal with the 23-year-old.
Speaking to the Telegraph (24 May), Mbappe revealed he spoke to Liverpool over a potential move before signing a new contract at PSG.
Sky News (21 May) claim the France international’s new deal is worth £1million-a-week and included a £100million signing-on fee.
Hutton insisted some players are worth breaking the bank for.
He claimed Liverpool were prepared to go above and beyond to try lure Mbappe to Anfield.
Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I mean, if you believe some of the quotes in the papers about the money that he’s on, if Liverpool were chatting to him, you would have though they were in the same ballpark figures-wise.
“There are certain players out there that would be the difference makers, even if you have a wage structure.
“With these kinds of exceptional players, you have to step out of that to get them to your club.
“If they would have got him, wow, that would have been special.”

As revealed by Football Insider (14 May), Liverpool are prepared to offer Mohamed Salah a deal worth more than £384,000-a-week.
They are also keen to tie Sadio Mane down but will not break the bank to keep him.
