Rangers 19-year-old can use international tournament to seal first-team place at Ibrox
COMMENT
Rangers midfielder Liam Burt is one of a number of young Gers players representing Scotland Under-21s at this summer’s Toulon Tournament – and the talented youngster can use the prestigious cup to seal a first-team place at Ibrox next season.
Burt is joined by Robby McCrorie and Glenn Middleton in the Scots squad – Ross McCrorie was also named in the pool but withdrew – as they look to impress in the south of France.
Burt made his first-team debut under Mark Warburton but has struggled to cement a place in the first-team squad since but, after an injury-hit season last term, a string of impressive performances over the summer will surely catapult him into Steven Gerrard’s thoughts.
Despite having been around for what seems like an eternity, Burt is still only 19 and is getting to the point in his career where regular first-team games will be the best thing for his development.
The midfielder spent a spell on loan with Dumbarton towards the end of the campaign after he returned from injury but with a full pre-season under his belt, Burt will be desperate to kick on after missing much of last season.
The 19-year-old is likely to find himself sent out on loan this season to get more games but if he can step up and put in the kind of performances that he regularly does for the Gers’ Under-20s then Gerrard might just give him a shot with the senior squad.
