Rangers 25-year-old tipped to shine after Tom Lawrence arrival – McAvennie

Frank McAvennie has claimed Ryan Kent needs a challenge at Rangers to help him improve.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Celtic striker said the signing of Tom Lawrence, 28, could give Kent, 25, a much needed break.

Speaking to club media after their pre-season victory against West Ham (20 July), Giovanni van Bronckhorst insisted he is happy with his new signings.

Both Kent and Lawrence scored in the Ibrox club’s 3-1 victory over the Hammers.

On 8 July, Rangers confirmed the signing of Lawrence on a three-year deal after his contract at Derby expired.

When asked if Lawrence could replace Kent in the Glasgow club’s starting 11, McAvennie told Football Insider: “Maybe it’s just what Kent needs because nobody has really challenged him.

He’s been the starter even when he’s been bad. So if there’s somebody there to take his place it might be the push that he needs.

Kent is a player, but you can’t just show up in Europe which is what he did last year. He had all these great games in Europe but you can’t just do that you have to do it week in week out.

Maybe bringing in Lawrence, he can swap him round and give him a break. Maybe that’s what the manager has planned.

Kent made 46 appearances for Rangers across all competitions last season.

He scored three goals and provided 20 assists during that time.
