Rangers and SPFL spat has left more questions than answers for the Gers board
COMMENT
Rangers released a lengthy statement on Tuesday calling for an independent investigation into a possible conflict of interest between SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan and Celtic’s largest individual shareholder Dermot Desmond.
The SPFL didn’t waste time in dismissing the claims, according to the Scottish Sun, insisting the matter had been disclosed to members of the SPFL’s board – including Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson – and it has only left more questions than answers for fans.
While the Gers are right to raise the issue and seek clarity on the nature of the relationship between Desmond and MacLennon after the latter was appointed to the board of directors of an Irish media company part-owned by Desmond – the claim that it was disclosed to the SPFL board immediately puts the spotlight on just what Robertson knew.
If the Gers managing director did know about MacLennan’s new role, it begs the question of whether he then passed that on the others on the board at Ibrox or if he kept that to himself.
Should it transpire that Robertson did know and decided not to pass it on to others within Ibrox then, quite simply, he has to be sacked – but if he did make others at Ibrox aware of it then King has some serious questions to answer to fans.
After years of the club being operated by people with no interest in the views of fans, the Gers supporters have grown tired of being treated like mushrooms by the Gers board and if it turns out King has tried to pull the wool over their eyes with the statement released on Tuesday then it could have serious repercussions for the Gers chairman.
