Rangers backed to complete defender signing after bid accepted – pundit

Frank McAvennie has urged Rangers to sign a centre-back this month.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Celtic striker said the Gers do not need additions to the midfield but are desperate for another central defender.

Last Tuesday (17 January), Football Insider broke the news that the Light Blues have had a bid accepted by Norwich City for Todd Cantwell, 24.

The midfielder is set to head to Glasgow to discuss terms and undergo medical tests.

Cantwell’s current contract at Carrow Road expires in the summer but could be heading for Ibrox this month.

As quoted by the BBC (20 January), Michael Beale also confirmed the club’s interest in Standard Liege midfielder Nicolas Raskin, who is out of contract in the summer.

But McAvennie claimed the Gers are looking in the wrong place for transfers.

I would have thought they would need a centre-half as a good backup,” he told Football Insider.

Ben Davies and Connor Goldson are the only two they have got at the moment. I would have been more interested in getting a centre-half than a midfield player because I think they have got enough midfield players.

It is alright buying players but you have got to buy the right ones and fill the right positions. Do not appease the fans by buying players because the fans are not stupid.

Besides Goldson and Davies, the clubs’ other centre-back options include Filip Helander and John Souttar who are both sidelined with injuries.

19-year-old Leon King and 22-year-old loanee James Sands have also been thrown in to ease injury woes.

In other news, according to sources, Queen’s Park and Gateshead make moves to sign Rangers forward Josh McPake.
