Rangers backed to green light signings blizzard after confirmed news – pundit
Players may have been waiting for confirmation of Rangers’ Champions League qualification before making a decision on joining the club.
That is the view of former Leeds and Aberdeen striker Noel Whelan, who was speaking exclusively to Football Insider in the wake of the Gers’ qualification to the Champions League group stages.
As quoted by the Scottish Daily Express (24 August), Van Bronckhorst insisted he is thinking about “competing with the best teams in Europe” and hinted “anything can happen” in the final days of the window.
Rangers have been drawn against Ajax, Napoli, and Liverpool in Group A of the Champions League after their two-legged win over PSV Eindhoven.
Football Insider finance guru Kieran Maguire claimed on Twitter (25 August) that the Ibrox club’s revenue for the year could top “£100million” after their success in Europe last term.
Whelan claimed Rangers would be “silly” not to add to their squad in an attempt to make it to the knockout stages.
He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “They’re a bit more appealing now they’ve qualified.
“Players may have been waiting to see the outcome of that PSV game before making a decision on joining.
“Now I believe, if they’re going to compete in that competition, I think spending some of that money would be very wise.
“They’ll be filling out the stadium.
“They’d be silly not to go out, get some players in, and see if they can push through into the knockout stages.

“What an achievement that would be.
“They’ve put themselves in a really good position to go out and get some good football names through the door again.”
