Rangers backed to seal deal for Calvin Bassey replacement after big-money move confirmed – expert
Alan Hutton has suggested Rangers will look to sign a left-back after Calvin Bassey’s exit was confirmed on Wednesday.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Gers and Tottenham right-back said the signing of Ben Davies could now prompt Giovanni van Bronckhorst to sign a left-back.
On Wednesday (20 July), Rangers confirmed that Bassey, 22, has left the club to join Dutch champions Ajax.
He leaves Ibrox for a club record fee of around £20million with add-ons.
The left-back joined Rangers from Leicester City’s under-23 team in 2020.
The Glasgow club have also confirmed (19 July) the signing of Ben Davies, 26, from Liverpool.
The defender put pen to paper on a four-year deal.
When asked if Davies would be a regular starter, Hutton told Football Insider‘s Charlotte Cohen: “I think he’ll definitely come in with aspirations of starting.
“Obviously Connor Goldson is a stick-on and there will be somebody alongside him. With Bassey leaving, he was an integral part of the Rangers team last season so there is an opportunity for him [Davies] to come in and play.

“Obviously he’s got competition, like everywhere else in the team. With [Nikola] Katic coming back into the team, there’s competition there but he’ll want to start.
“I think moving forward Rangers now looking at things, they’ll have to bring in a left-back as well. Calvin Bassey suited both of the positions.“
