Rangers backed to topple Celtic as new Hoops ‘hammer blow’ suggested – Hutton

Alan Hutton has claimed Ange Postecoglou leaving Celtic would “derail” the Scottish Premiership leaders and give Rangers a route to the title.

The former Gers and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted that he “can’t see” the 57-year-old leaving Parkhead mid-season.

Celtic lead Rangers by nine points atop the Scottish Premiership with action set to resume on 15 December.

However, according to journalist Alan Nixon (13 November), Hoops boss Postecoglou is “top of the wishlist” for Everton should they part company with Frank Lampard.

The Australian has already been forced to brush off speculation linking him with Premier League strugglers Wolves and Brighton this season.

Postecoglou, who won the Scottish Premiership with Celtic last term, is still on the 12-month rolling contract he signed when he arrived in Glasgow.

Hutton hailed the former Yokohama F. Marinos boss for “changing the whole culture” at Parkhead.

When asked if Postecoglou leaving the club would throw Rangers a bone in the title race, Hutton told Football Insider: “The gap is nine points.

“Rangers and Celtic still have to play each other three times, so that’s nine points right there – and teams will drop points outside of that, too.

“But I can’t see Postecoglou leaving.

“He’s done a fantastic job but he’s building something for the long term. It speaks highly of what he’s done so far that these Premier League teams are looking to bring him in.

“If he was to go, it’d be a hammer blow. He’s changed the way they play football and the whole culture of the club.

“It would definitely derail them, but I can’t see him leaving.”
