Rangers to suffer major mishap if they let uncertainty reign over huge gamble in summer

COMMENT

Rangers could have a new manager in the hotseat over the summer if they decide not to renew Graeme Murty’s short-term contract – but the uncertainty over who will be in charge can’t derail the Light Blues summer transfer plans.

Director of football Mark Allen had a blinder in January as he helped Murty seriously improve his squad with the addition of the likes of Jamie Murphy and Jason Cummings but while much of the Gers transfer business in January was loans – the Gers have options on Murphy and Cummings – and a number of first-team stars out of contract, the Ibrox giants will have no option but to be busy in the transfer market.

Any new manager would have a preference for who he’d like to bring in but it’s already clear now there are areas of the squad which badly need upgraded and Allen should be working on filling those spots now regardless of who is in charge when the 2018/19 season kicks off.

The mess that was made of the pursuit of Derek McInnes hasn’t exactly left fans confident the Gers board will get a new man in place early – if they decide to take such a huge gamble – and give them a chance to get his feet under his desk before the Europa League qualifiers kick off.

If the Gers do wait until the summer before making a decision on who and what they need to improve the squad then it will quite likely leave the Ibrox giants suffering a major mishap before a ball is kicked.

The Gers have taken too many gambles in recent years – and seen every single one of them blow up in their face – and simply can’t afford to make the same mistakes again this time.
