Rangers could be facing signing blow after source’s ‘massive’ reveal – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Rangers could miss out on their top targets to replace the likes of Glen Kamara if they drop out of the Champions League.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, expressed “worries” for the Ibrox club as they prepare to lose a “massive nucleus” of players.

Football Insider revealed on Sunday (25 September) that Rangers are willing to sell Kamara, 26, in January with two big-name signings possibly needed in order to raise transfer funds.

Rangers

The Gers already lost key men Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo during the summer window despite qualifying for the Champions League group stage.

However, Rangers have suffered heavy defeats in their first two European matches and risk finishing bottom of the group.

The Bears can only secure an automatic return to the group stage in 2023-24 by winning the Scottish Premiership – but currently sit two points behind rivals Celtic.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Dropping out of the Champions League could stop them getting the players they really want.

“These kinds of players may already be playing in the Champions League. It might not be for Man United or Man City, but for another continental side.

“It could mean these players go elsewhere.

“Everything depends on that continental football and how long you can sustain success in these competitions.

“Of course, they’re always going to be successful domestically – they’re Glasgow Rangers.

“But at the same time, they’ve lost a lot of really good, talented players. Their targets might think ‘oh, I’m going to a really weakened Rangers side here – I’m not playing alongside Kamara, Kent, Bassey or Aribo’.

“They’re losing a massive nucleus of talented players, and it’s worrying.”
