Rangers could U-turn on Alfredo Morelos contract talks after development – pundit

Gabriel Agbonlahor has claimed Rangers could U-turn on handing Alfredo Morelos a new contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aston Villa striker said the Gers may want to sell Morelos because of his poor disciplinary record.

The 26-year-old was sent off in Rangers’ 2-2 draw with Hibernian on Saturday (20 August).

The striker was shown a straight red for an elbow on Marijan Cabraja.

The Colombia international was left out of the travelling squad as the Bears faced PSV Eindhoven in the second leg of their Champions League playoff.

On 26 July, the Daily Record reported that Morelos was closing in on a contract extension at Ibrox.

When asked if Rangers might look to sell the striker, Agbonlahor told Football Insider: “I think Rangers will want to extend his deal but if he keeps doing these silly red cards they might question it.

They might want to try and get a decent fee for him and get him out the door because players can’t be costing their team the way he does. He has a chance to be on the pitch and shouldn’t get silly red cards.

This isn’t football in the 80s or 90s anymore, you can’t just throw your arms out like that. It’s naïve. If I was his teammate I’d be saying something to him because you can’t keep doing that all the time.

As revealed by The Sun (22 August), Morelos has now received the most red cards in the club’s history.

He has been sent off eight times since his debut for the Ibrox club in 2017.
