Kieran Maguire: Rangers have just bagged seven-figure windfall with additional £1.5m due in March
Rangers will earn at least £2.5million in prize money and matchday income after progressing to the Europa League last-16.
So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the financial rewards of the Gers’ European exploits.
A James Tavernier brace gave Rangers a 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund at Ibrox last night and sealed a famous 6-4 aggregate victory.
It is the third successive season that the Glasgow giants have reached the last 16.
Uefa confirmed today (25 February) that Rangers will face Red Star Belgrade over two legs in the last-16 stage in March.
Prize money and the cash generated from ticket sales at Ibrox in the next round will total north of £2.5m, reveals Maguire.
“It’s worth £1m in basic prize money,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.
“But in addition to that, they get a share of the broadcast pool.
“Because BT Sport have paid more for the broadcast rights to Uefa than any other country, it means they will get a sizable amount on top of that.
“The distribution model is complex. It doesn’t sound like a huge amount, £1m.
“But Ibrox will sell out in the next round. So they should be looking to make the best part of £1.5m from a home match.
“It helps them in terms of their Uefa coefficient as well.”

Rangers resume their domestic campaign at home to Motherwell on Sunday (27 February).
