Sources: Sean Dyche ‘very keen’ to open Rangers talks

Sean Dyche is interested in speaking to Rangers about the newly-vacant manager’s job, sources have told Football Insider.

The 51-year-old has been without a job since being sacked by Burnley in April after an outstanding nine-and-a-half year spell in which they were an established Premier League club.

Dyche has publicly made it clear he wants to get back into management and is believed, well-placed sources tell us, to be “very keen” on talking to Rangers.

The Glasgow giants are looking for their 18th permanent manager following the sacking of Giovanni van Bronckhorst earlier on Monday.

The Dutchman was dismissed days after his first anniversary at the helm, and just months after leading the club to a remarkable runners-up spot in the Europa League.

But Van Bronckhorst has paid the price for a calamitous 2022-23 season in which Rangers had the worst Champions League group stage campaign in the competition’s history and went into the mid-season break with their hopes of winning the Scottish Premiership title looking forlorn.

Dyche ticks many boxes for Rangers as he is a proven top-level manager and has managed successfully both in the Premier League and in the English Championship.

He is also available and not attached to a club, which would alleviate the need to pay compensation costs.

Dyche, who began his managerial career at Watford, has a stellar record at Burnley, who he dragged from Championship relegation candidates to a regular mid-table Premier League finish on a budget dwarfed by most rivals in the division.

The Clarets even finishing seventh in the top-flight back in 2017-18.

Dyche has managed 258 Premier League matches in total, winning 72 and drawing 68.

Asked on talkSPORT earlier in November if he knows how big Rangers and Celtic are, Dyche stated: “Oh yeah, of course. I do know Ross Wilson [sporting director at Rangers], if he’d like to invite me to the Old Firm derby, I’ve never been.

“I’d love to go I’ve heard so many stories and I’ve never done it.”
