Pundit slams ’embarrassing’ Rangers after ‘very strange’ Celtic development

It is “embarrassing” that Rangers failed to accommodate away fans for last weekend’s clash with Celtic.

So says ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Rangers’ 1-0 win over their arch rivals on 29 August.

Only Rangers fans were in attendance at Ibrox after the club rescinded its offer of 700 tickets to Celtic supporters.

That came after the Hoops were unable to guarantee the same number of Rangers fans would be allowed at Parkhead amid Covid uncertainty.

But Kenny insisted that Rangers’ behaviour was “petty” and that the derby would have been a better spectacle played out in front of both sets of fans.

“It’s a bit embarrassing,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“You want both sets of fans there for a derby, chanting against each other. That’s what it’s all about.

“I know they don’t want all the trouble, but they have got to try and police it better if that’s the case.

“But to be arguing over 700 tickets is really petty. It’s something they need to sort out because surely you want your rival fans causing an atmosphere.

“Those supporters make the derby an even bigger occasion. So I find it very strange that they’d chose to do that.

Rangers’ victory in the derby came courtesy of a Filip Helander header with 25 minutes of the match remaining.

That result moves them onto nine points after four games, and to within one point of Hearts and Hibs atop the Scottish Premiership.
