Rangers expected to accept ‘incredible’ Calvin Bassey bid after source’s £6m reveal – expert

Alex McLeish has tipped Rangers to accept an “incredible” offer for Calvin Bassey this summer amid interest in Stoke City left-back Josh Tymon.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Giovanni van Bronckhorst would be torn about letting the 22-year-old leave Ibrox.

As revealed by Football Insider on Tuesday (7 June), Rangers are in the market for a new left-back and have registered their interest in Tymon, 23.

An Ibrox source told this site on Thursday (9 June) that Stoke have set a £6million asking price on the defender’s head to ward off interest.

The Gers view Tymon as a possible replacement for either Bassey or Borna Barisic.

McLeish suggested a big-money offer for the former Leicester starlet could tempt Rangers into selling.

Asked if interest in Tymon could mean Rangers are preparing to sell either defender, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “We’ve speculated on these things for so long. My thoughts are if they get an incredible fee or offer for Bassey, I believe they might do the business.

“That is primarily to free up funds as well for the manager. Although they would want to keep him given the massive progress he’s made over this last season.

“He turned from a kind of potential guy to an absolute can’t-leave-him-out player. We saw that with his performances in the two cup finals.

“This is where the recruitment guys come in in the modern-day. Back in the day, I would have always wanted to see players, especially guys that I never knew. If I never knew their quality and it was a new name to me, I would always see them.

“Nowadays, there’s a lot of trust in the recruitment department. The logarithms, algorithms and all this newfound scientific technology, it seems to work for most clubs.”
