Rangers expected to sign proven attacker after Ianis Hagi injury latest – McLeish

Alex McLeish has tipped Rangers to sign a new attacker this summer with Ianis Hagi set to remain out injured for much of the year.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Light Blues do not have enough cover in the final third.

As quoted by Football Scotland (6 June), Hagi’s father, Georghe, revealed the 23-year-old is “50 per cent” of the way through his recovery from the serious knee injury suffered in January.

He claimed it would be “three or four months” before the versatile attacking midfielder returns to action.

With Hagi out for the opening months of the upcoming campaign, McLeish suggested Giovanni van Bronckhorst will look to bolster his forward line.

“I do believe Giovanni will look to strengthen the squad,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“Having lost Hagi and having not enough cover in most areas, he will strive to bring (players in). That’s only a prediction but he’ll definitely want to put his own stamp on it.

“I can say from experience, only bring players that are definitely going to make the team better. Don’t say maybe.

“Giovanni will be at the mentality stage where he knows he has to bring players who will enhance the team.”

Hagi managed to play 27 times across all competitions during the 2021/22 campaign.

He chipped in with four goals and four assists.
