Rangers expert backs controversial plan as game-changing details emerge
Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton has backed plans for a reconstruction of the Scottish football pyramid.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers right-back said the new plans would be a big boost to Scotland’s international side.
As reported by the Daily Record (10 March), the reconstruction would see Celtic, Rangers, Hearts and Aberdeen B teams introduced into a Scottish Conference at the fifth tier of the pyramid, alongside several Highland and Lowland league sides.
Sceptics of the revamp have pointed out that the West of Scotland, South of Scotland and East of Scotland divisions would all be bypassed if the new format takes shape.
But Hutton suggested the plans will benefit Scottish football as a whole.
It would be interesting to see how it works out,” he told Football Insider.
“I know not everybody is overly happy about B teams being involved. I think for the future of the game and bringing these young, talented boys through they have to play at this level.
“They have to play against tough opposition week in week out. That is the only way they are going to get better and get used to it.

“Ultimately it helps the teams but it also helps Scotland moving forward because you are getting all these players who are playing and ready to go.
“I think it is a good thing. There are a lot of ifs and buts but it is definitely something that I think will help young boys improve their game.“
