Rangers expert disagrees with Dermot Gallagher as Ryan Kent footage analysed
Alan Hutton “feels sorry for” Kilmarnock’s Ryan Alebiosu after he gave away a penalty against Rangers.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender said that the incident was a penalty “by the letter of the law” but said the visiting side were “unlucky” to concede it.
As shown on Sky Sports (6 March), a crossed ball from James Tavernier found the on-running Ryan Kent alongside Alebiosu in the box where the ball appeared to strike the Killie defender on the arm.
Although referee Willie Collum didn’t initially point to the spot, he was instructed to consult the pitchside monitor and ultimately awarded the penalty to the home side, which Tavernier slammed into the back of the net.
Rangers went on to a comfortable 3-1 victory and maintain second place in the Scottish Premiership.
Speaking on Sky Sports Ref Watch (6 March), former referee Dermot Gallagher couldn’t believe the referee’s decision to award the penalty.
But Hutton insisted that, although unlucky, it was the right call.
“I thought it was unlucky,” he told Football Insider.

“It was a good ball through from James Tavernier and the two players are obviously running towards goal and the ball skips up really quickly off the grass.
“You have got no time to react to it, it does hit his hand and by the letter of the law it is a penalty. But you have got to feel sorry for him a little but. I think it is a little bit harsh.“
