Rangers expert drops ‘wild’ claim as Cyriel Dessers footage analysed

Greenock Morton’s penalty against Rangers was “soft”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers defender Alan Hutton said that there was always a chance Cyriel Dessers would have given away a spot kick after his challenge.

As shown on Viaplay Sports (19 August), Morton were awarded a penalty after a VAR review for Dessers’ challenge on Kirk Broadfoot.

Referee David Dickinson did not initially give the spot kick but was instructed by VAR officials to have another look at the incident on the pitchside monitor, at which point he awarded the penalty.

Grant Gillespie converted from the spot to put the visitors 1-0 up before they went on to lose 2-1 as the Gers progressed to the next round of the Viaplay Cup.

When asked for his assessment of the incident, Hutton told Football Insider:Dessers takes a poor touch in the box, I think he tries to chest it and then takes a wild swing at it.

If there is a touch it is minimal.

I looked at it six, seven, eight times. It is difficult to see but it is one of those ones where if you lash out in the box, the player goes over, there is always that chance that you are going to give away a penalty.

It is soft but I understand why it was given.

The Gers will face Livingston in the quarter-final of the competition where they will play Livingston.

The first leg of the tie will take place at the end of September but Michael Beale’s side first have to navigate the second leg of their Champions League play-off against PSV Eindhoven and the first Old Firm clash of the season.
