Rangers expert issues ‘100%’ John Souttar claim as new details emerge
Alan Hutton has claimed John Souttar “made things worse” for himself at Rangers.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender said that that the backroom staff can’t be blamed for Souttar’s premature return to action.
The 26-year-old made his debut for the Light Blues against Livingston at the start of the season before he was subbed off after 67 minutes and spent the next seven months on the sidelines.
The defender returned to the side earlier this month and has made two appearances for a total of 13 minutes.
As quoted by the Daily Record (25 March), Souttar admitted that he wasn’t honest with the medical staff and should have said that he couldn’t play.
The centre-back said he has been training for the last four or five weeks and is ready to “properly” start his career at Ibrox.
When asked if the medical staff could have done more to prevent Souttar from playing before he was ready, Hutton told Football Insider: “I think ultimately it is down to the player.
“I have been in the situation myself. A new manager came in at Tottenham, it was Harry Redknapp and I was not quite ready but I played and made things worse.
“I was trying to impress but it backfired so I understand exactly where he is coming from. He signed for a new team, everybody knows that he has a history of injuries so he wanted to get out there and show everybody what he is capable of.
“The problem is people judge you off that and if you are not at 100 per cent or close to it.

“It just shows the kind of person that he is that he is willing to fight through it and try and produce.
“But ultimately you have to be careful and you can’t blame the backroom staff because it is can be easy for a player to hide how bad it is.“
