Rangers expert lauds radical SFA move after confirmed news
Ex-Rangers defender Alan Hutton has praised the Scottish FA’s latest rule change.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender is hopeful the new rules around heading the ball will be a good thing for football.
The Scottish Football Association confirmed (28 November) that they have introduced new guidelines limiting heading the ball for the adult game.
The new rules prevent professional footballers in Scotland from heading the ball in training the day before and after a game.
Clubs are also being told to limit exercises that involve repetitive heading to one session per week.
The latest guidelines have been introduced after consultation with the 50 clubs across the men’s and women’s game in Scotland.
When asked what the impact of the new rules will be on clubs like Rangers, Hutton told Football Insider: “I hope in the long run it will be a positive one.
“We see what is going on with ex-players so I think this is a step in the right direction to try and help prevent serious injury further down the line.

“In terms of football and how you set up, normally the day before a game you practice set plays and free-kicks and corners. That is all going to have to be moved to a few days before.
“Just certain tweaks that teams are going to have to make. Looking at the bigger picture it is a good thing for football to be taking action on it.“
