Rangers expert makes ‘big’ Malik Tillman claim after what he spotted in person
Alan Hutton has suggested the reason Michael Beale dropped Nicolas Raskin and Todd Cantwell for Rangers last weekend.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender said Beale backed John Lundstram and Malik Tillman’s experience in such a “big” game.
The Light Blues boss opted to start recently injured Lundstram as well as Tillman instead of the two January signings in the League Cup final against Celtic last weekend (26 February).
The Gers went on to lose the game 2-1.
Raskin and Cantwell were included in the starting lineup for the 3-1 win over Kilmarnock on Saturday (4 March).
Hutton suggested Beale was worried the size of the occasion may have been too much for the new arrivals last weekend.
“Looking back hindsight is a wonderful thing and you probably would start them if I am being brutally honest,” he told Football Insider.
“I understand why Michael Beale chose to go with Tillman and bring Lundstram back in for their experience. They know what it is all about, they understand how big a task it was.
“That is not saying the other two do not. But for me, watching the game, I thought Tillman looked a little bit off it. I did not think he was 100 per cent and Lundstram did not look himself.

“It was not until they made the changes, Raskin came on and looked right involved, looked aggressive.
“Maybe looking back on it it was the wrong decision but I understand looking back on it why he chose the team that he did.“
