Major blow: Key Rangers man travelling to Manchester to see specialist, out of Celtic clash
By Abigail Withey
Pedro Caixinha has confirmed that skipper Lee Wallace will miss Rangers’ first Old Firm clash of the season due to injury.
The 30-year-old went down after just 10 minutes on Friday night during his side’s 2-2 draw against Partick Thistle and was replaced by Cardiff loanee Declan John.
The Lights Blues boss has explained that the Scotsman is due to travel to Manchester on Monday to find out the extent of his injury but confirmed that the skipper would be out for both fixtures this week.
“Lee Wallace is out, he is travelling to Manchester today to have an assessment on his groin so let’s see how it goes,” Caixinha told the Rangers official website.
“Depending on the outcome of that we will see what we need to do. He will miss the weekend, Lee is out we just need to know for how long he needs to be out.”
His absence from the squad will be greatly missed by his team mates and fans as his leadership and experience is admired at the Ibrox.
Wallace has featured in a majority of the club’s matches of the season except against Hibernian in the Premiership and Dunfermline in the League Cup because of a previous thigh injury.
Rangers face Partick Thistle for a second time in just a few days as Caixinha’s side travel to the Firhill stadium on Tuesday for their Scottish League Cup quarter final clash.
The Light Blues will then prepare to host Celtic at the Ibrox on Saturday for the first Old Firm showdown of the season.
Last year, the Gers failed to secure a single win against Brendan Rodgers’ team and suffered two heavy 5-1 defeats to the domestic treble winners.
