Rangers fan notices something very odd about Celtic’s red card vs Bologna

Celtic picked up a valuable point in the Europa League on Thursday as they drew 2-2 with Bologna.

The result has kept the Hoops 24th in the League table, meaning qualification for the playoff stage is still in their hands.

Despite being 2-0 up, the result was deemed as a good one considering Reo Hatate’s early red card for the visitors.

While Hatate’s red card for Martin O’Neill’s side was considered harsh by some, one Rangers fan was quick to point out that it has continued an odd trend for the Old Firm side.

Celtic continue to pick up red cards in Europe despite lack of dismissals in Scotland

Hatate’s red card on Thursday was Celtic’s fifth in European matches in their last 25.

However, one Rangers fan pointed out on X that the Hoops have not received a sending off in their last 86 domestic games, despite their poor discipline record in Europe.

Their last red card came in their 2-0 defeat to Hearts back in March 2024, when Yang Hyun-jun was sent off.

O’Neill’s side have been pretty fortunate to keep this run going, with plenty of controversial decisions going in their favour since Yang’s red card.

What is Celtic’s disciplinary record in the Scottish Premiership this season?

Looking at the stats, Celtic are perhaps fortunate to have not picked up a red card this season.

According to Fotmob on 23 January, the Hoops are averaging 11.9 fouls a match, which is the eighth highest in the division.

However, they have only received 34 yellow cards, which is the tenth lowest, with only Dundee and Motherwell picking up less.

Yet, despite the Hoops consistently fouling each game, they are one of three teams not to pick up a red card this season, alongside Falkirk and Motherwell.

With O’Neill’s side now set to face some big matches as Celtic hunts for the Scottish Premiership title, the manager will be hoping this trend does not come to an end anytime soon.

O’Neill will need as many players available to him as possible if they are going to pip Hearts to the title come the end of the season.

Nevertheless, the Celtic Park faithful will be hoping their discipline improves in Europe going forward, as it continues to cost them on the big stage.
