‘Absolutely gutted’, ‘Weak link’ – Rangers fans fear the worst after injury news v Celtic
Russell Martin looks set to miss the Gers game with Celtic on Sunday in the massive clash at the top of the Scottish Premier League.
The Brighton-born defender has been struggling with a back injury and after sitting out training on Thursday to undergo physiotherapy, his appearance in the game looks unlikely.
A club insider revealed that he was out and manager Graeme Murty confirmed the news of his injury at his pre-match press conference.
That means Bruno Alves will likely be stepping in to partner rookie David Bates with the two playing together only once – last weekend in the 4-1 Scottish Cup win over Falkirk.
The highly experienced Portuguese defender has been missing for large parts of the season due to various injuries and there were even predictions that the 36-year-old would fall casualty after only a few minutes in the Glasgow derby.
One fan described him as a ‘weak link,’ and another said ‘I fear Bruno Alves starting.’
There is clearly a lot of apprehension surrounding the enforcer’s return to the SPL.
However it can’t be forgotten that Alves has a wealth of know how on the international and domestic scene so his name on the starting XI sheet may not be as bad as Gers fans seem to think.
Here is a selection of Twitter reactions to the news that Alves could start against Celtic:
